![]() ![]() My only complaint here is that it's really hard to throw the knife without just dropping it. ![]() I sadly didn't get to try many of the weapons beyond the knife though, since they're scarce and you're easily disarmed. It's not terribly complicated, mostly dodging and countering with the occasional boot to the head. All the effort has been poured into making the combat feel good, and it shows. ![]() Now, leaving aside those two things, the actual meat and potatoes of the game are really solid. Wolves especially will spot you if you're within 180° of their front. This game also commits the cardinal sin of stealth gameplay: No grace period between being spotted and the enemy being on your ass. By the time I kill the first two, the last one can OHKO me every time. One wolf is enough to kill me 90% of the time, but three? Forget it. I was playing on the easiest setting and getting my ♥♥♥♥ kicked in all the time, culminating in a level where you have to fight three wolves in a row. This game is fun and has really cool combat mechanics, but it also has some major flaws. Anyway, Lugaru is now playable in it's entirety, with updated engine, mechanics, and canon changes, in the sequel Overgrowth. I'm leaving the below review up for posterity because apparently a younger me had no concept of stealth mechanics and just ran in to fight three wolves like an idiot. If you want a great 3D brawler then this may be your game. Timing, stealth and smart response are absolutely necessary for success. They will gleefully all attack at once, pounding your rabbit head into a sticky paste. But you won't find enemies timing their attacks for you here. The reversals and context sensitve hand -to-hand and melee combat feel very much like a prototype for Rocksteady's Batman games. This is Batman Arkham Asylum with the difficulty cranked up to 11. But forget about all the fluff for a moment and let's take a look at the meat of the game The combat system. Story-wise this game is a pure revenge tale that grows into story about betrayal and conspiracy. I'd heard a bunch of negative responses to the game, with implications that it's some kind of "furry" sim. So I downloaded this in a fit of boredom the other night, having acquired this game in the first Humble Indie Bundle. Tuly one of the most satisfying fighting games where you can win not only with combat moves but also by using the environment and cunning. Characters get cuts and blood smearing accuretaly where they were hit. Stealth and takedowns are satisfying, and nothing feels as good as coming on top from a 1v3 fight against armed enemies like a boss. However, when they return they no longer know your position, only where you used to be. Sometimes if you woop an enemy's ass, they will give up and run to their friends to get backup. The AI is actually challenging they fight well and it takes practise to be able to reliably win even a 1v1 fight, let alone a fight against multiple enemies. You only have one attack button, but you can execute a multitude of defferent moves depending on your position relative to the enemies and what you or they are doing at the time. The graphics are dated but this game is actually really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ good. ![]()
